That made the Arabesque a collector’s item and the new version of this model promises to be no different, thanks to the signature lugs.

Built using new laminates and materials, the M10S is designed to be both light and stiff. A larger bottom bracket shell and tapered headtube increase lateral rigidity while still allowing the bike to cushion road vibrations. A tapered headtube adds rigidity to the front of the bike to improve handling, while an oversized BB bottom bracket shell lends stiffness to the drivetrain, improving power transfer.

The Colnago M10 has landed! The Colnago M10 has been a frame I have very much wanted to test ride for sometime now. As a brand, I feel FSA have come on leaps and bounds. They have a reported weight of g. Having recently returned from Cambiago, I had a long conversation with Ernesto about this frame. I was intrigued to know more about this full monocouque design. Also, this allows Colnago to know exactly who built the frame which is pretty unique in this day and age.

Colnago are fully committed to this operation and have even established an office out in Taiwan. All the carbon fibre used to make the M10 is sourced from Toray Carbon who are one of the world leaders in carbon fibre production and technology. Then and only then, are they prepared for the Paint-shop which is based in Florence, Italy. Having seen these frames in the flesh and raw form in Italy, it was extremely interesting to see at first hand the inspection process. Once the frames have been painted, they are again inspected and then sent out to Colnago customers and distributors world-wide!

However, Ernesto wanted to produce a high end full monocouque frame. The M10 is indeed quite a robust looking frame, but its also the lightest carbon frame in the range.

Benotto sponsored a pro team and the model was essentially a Team replica. This frame is really very special — take a look at the lug shorelines and filing and the little point to the front of the seat lug. It is frequently asserted that these frames were built by De Rosa — it is not true though there were some Team frames back in the s that were… However they did adopt some similar features such as the triangular shaped chainstays and heart cutout in the BB shell; on the other hand the fork crown is pure Pela… However these top of the range Benottos are exceptionally nice.

FRAME CLAMPS AND BRAZE-ONS. Braze-ons are brackets that, through the process of brazing or silver soldering, are permanently attached to a frame set. Braze-ons began appearing on bicycle frame sets, in an effort to replace the Old School clamp-on assemblies.

In these cases examination of the frame number — where it is, what it is, and how it is, may be of some assistance at least in allowing other specialists to hazard a guess at the true origin of the frame or machine. These publications have been invaluable in adding accuracy to the information — but even including their data there are still well over makes of possible lightweights to be confused over!

The author would be grateful to know of any inaccuracies and to receive further information to make the tables more comprehensive. For example, some BSA frames have BSA and a 3 or 4 figure number cast into the base of the BB, this is just the casting number or perhaps a model number — it is not the frame number. Nervex, the lug maker, also had their name on their BB lugs with a long design serial number.

Make a note of where on the BB the number is and its orientation — for example, is it upright or inverted for reading when lifting the front wheel up with the rear wheel still on the ground? Is it central or on the left or right flange of the BB as seen from this upright view? Some builders stamped the numbers parallel to the edge of the BB, yet others are random when compared over the years.

Most builders also stamped the frame number on the steerer tube of the front forks — but you may not wish to strip the machine down for this and in any case the forks may have been changed over the years. It can be worthy of note however that as sometimes very thick layers of paint can make the main frame number difficult to read —the steerer tube number is the only reliable evidence! Granby before used to punch the number on the underside of the head tube —along the bottom edge of the fork crown.
