Hooking up a amp vehicle to a amp power pedestal whenever possible will help protect the long-term dependability of appliances in your rig, Finch says. The breakers for the electrical systems in most campgrounds are designed with a tolerance of percent, plus or minus. If breakers tripped at exactly 30 amps, they would cost much more — perhaps 10 times as much — as breakers normally used. A amp outlet supplies 3, watts 30 amps multiplied by volts. Therefore, the breaker on that outlet could meet code and still trip anywhere between a total load of 2, watts 80 percent of 3, watts and 4, watts percent of 3, watts. That sets up a situation where the breaker on a amp outlet may not trip until the load exceeds 4, watts. For amp service, however, the potential amount of power used — 12, watts, or 50 amps times volts — represents more than three times as much possible demand as amp service. Conversely, a amp rig hooked up to a amp outlet is only getting about one-third of the power that the rig may need to run a full complement of appliances. The same principle applies to the design of electrical circuits in commercial buildings and campgrounds. And an overload causes the same result in every case — a tripped breaker and, possibly, a burned-out plugin.
240v garage heater wiring?
Except for a specialty outlet, such as for a stove, larger BTU air conditioners or some electrical clothes dryers, virtually every other wall outlet will be a polarized two-prong outlet with a third-prong grounding plug. Older homes were only fitted with two-prong outlets and cannot be retrofitted with a three prong grounding outlet. But the basic wiring technique is the same for all wall outlets, grounded or not.
An easy way to calculate the amount of amperage you’ll need from a power supply is to add up the fuses in your amplifier, and divide that total in half. For example, if you’ve got a pair of amp fuses in your amplifier, you’ll need approximately 15 amps of continuous power from your 12V power supply.
Often the question is asked: Check inside the circuit breaker panel to verify the circuit type. Check to see that only a black or other colored wire and white wire are present that feed the outlet to be changed. A green or bare wire should also be present for proper grounding. However, if there is one white wire for each line conductor in the run between the breaker panel and the plug, this is not an Edison circuit and it is OK to use the following procedure. Under ideal conditions, one would select an existing dedicated outlet that is fed from a single circuit breaker.
There should be three wires feeding this outlet: If the selected outlet is dedicated one outlet on the circuit-breaker skip to step 3. If there is a chain of outlets on a circuit, select an outlet that is conveniently located, remove it and the rest of the receptacles on the same circuit in the following manner: Turn off the power.
Adding an Electrical Outlet Cost
If you’re in that position, you might occasionally want to use your car amp in the house to drive a set of speakers. Car amplifiers run on 12V DC power and your wall outlet puts out V AC, so making them play together nicely takes a bit of persuasion. Power Supply Amperage An easy way to calculate the amount of amperage you’ll need from a power supply is to add up the fuses in your amplifier, and divide that total in half.
For example, if you’ve got a pair of amp fuses in your amplifier, you’ll need approximately 15 amps of continuous power from your 12V power supply. You can buy units with 15 to 20 amps of current at retailers such as Radio Shack.

Have you ever wanted to recharge your laptop or phone while you sit on the beach — or at the coffee shop, when all the power outlets are being used by people who have been nursing the same cup of coffee for two hours? Well, now you can with ChargeAll — the first portable battery pack that has both a USB charging socket and a volt wall plug outlet. Yes, you can just plug just about any V device into the ChargeAll — and in many cases, thanks to the inclusion of a huge lithium-ion battery, power that device for hours.
Maganis and co just seem to be the first to execute this obvious-in-hindsight idea. And now the big caveat: There are two models: Weight might also be an issue: The Portable model weighs in at 15 ounces grams ; the Powerful is 22 ounces grams — about the weight of an iPad. Alternatively, you could power a small TV for a few hours, or a desktop fan for most of the day. You could even power a curling iron for an hour or two.

But in addition to the volt electrical supply, there may also be lights, fans, a refrigerator, or other electrical devices which use a 12 volt supply, like that of a car or truck. A volt DC system powers the RV refrigerator to keep food cold while the RV or camper trailer is moving from place to place. The same goes for the lights and fans. It also keeps the on-board batteries fully charged. This system relies on the volt AC electrical power supply for amperage.
It is possible to pull a volt power supply from the RV or camper trailer’s electrical system or volt campsite power supply. Then the volt supply can be stepped down to 12 volts after it is run through a power converter and to a particular appliance. These two electrical systems are treated independently from each other when diagnosing electrical problems, except for determining power to the converter.
The lights, fans, or refrigerator may each be on their own circuits, depending on the amperage required. If the converter is supplying 12 volts to the breaker panel and the breakers test positive for voltage, this leaves the wiring or the particular appliance at fault. A Serro Scotty classic. If it is a universal drive, (or DC), it may spin up to twice its intended speed, and wear out quickly. If you plug a V device into V outlet, it will normally last a little longer before it dies.
What Does This Outlet Do? House-style AC outlets are one of those handy “little things that count” car convenience features that literally have hundreds of uses. The feature is still far from standard equipment on family vehicles where it often appears, and it’s usually paired with expensive rear-seat multimedia systems in large SUVs and minivans or available only on more expensive trim levels.
When equipped, this power inverter converts power from DC to AC. The outlets are typically found in the second row or cargo area and look just like a wall outlet at home. The outlet goes by different names and voltage ratings like , and volt AC outlets, and they are found in sedans, SUVs, trucks and minivans, though they all serve the same purpose and offer a house-style pronged power outlet inside your vehicle, in addition to the common probe-style DC outlets that accept phone and portable GPS chargers.
As cool as it would be to plug an electric snow blower or refrigerator into your vehicle, not everything with a plug works. The outlet has its limitations, and there are guidelines to follow in order to use electronic devices safely.
Electrical Outlet Doesn’t Work and Breaker isn’t Tripped
But since you are looking to use GFCI many jurisdictions aren’t going to require an equipment ground at all. In the USA, that very rarely is acceptable any more. As of about or so??? They now want a full isolated ground wire almost all the time, even between buildings on the same place. One can find a farm exception, but it’s not prefered any more and many local inspectors won’t allow it.
Patented green operating mode achieves efficiencies over 97%. Smart-ups was the first network UPS to be Energy Star certified. Intelligent battery management, pioneered by APC, maximizes battery performance and life through intelligent, precision temperature compensated charging.
Tip by E ScottD on Step 14 a few seconds ago Upvote 0 A couple of things, that I can see that would help your project would be to install a ground rod on the generator or the box leading to the generator grounding the circuit. It could preclude instances of getting shocked if touching something energized a hotplate and a device already installed in the home the stove, range hood etc.. Adding a ground rod would help.
Also don’t run any high end appliances while on generator unless you keep a close eye on the fuel level. When the generator runs out of fuel, it dosen’t just stop, it runs down. While it is doing this it will decrease the amount of voltage to the house. Find an old picture tube type TV if ya have to have a TV. Tip by Philbert D 22 hours ago Upvote 0 Great write up. You do not know what is happening ‘upstream’ from you and could introduce power to lines currently being worked on.
I have an almost exact setup to yours with a pair of load meters added and, except for the above mentioned step-order change, virtually identical startup procedures.
Upgrade your outdated receptacles without the expense of rewiring By Harry Sawyers of This Old House magazine Photo by Keate Photo by Keate Two-prong receptacle ungrounded Old-fashioned two-prong receptacles connected to two-wire cables don’t have the ground wires that protect people and electrical devices in case of a fault. Yet it is possible to retrofit a new three-prong or GFCI receptacle into the same outlet box without any rewiring, as long as the box itself is grounded.
Luckily, metal boxes attached to armored, or BX, cable—a type of wiring commonly found in old houses—generally are grounded; the cable’s flexible metal jacket serves the same purpose as a dedicated ground wire. To switch out your receptacles, just follow the steps. Insert one prong of a circuit tester into the receptacle’s hot slot the shorter one , and touch the other to a screw that secures the cover plate.
